What is the Youth Commission on Police, Fire and Crime?

The Youth Commission encourages young people to get involved in, and express their views, on a range of issues affecting the communities where they live. The Youth Commission of Northamptonshire enables young people to support, challenge and inform the work of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, Mr Stephen Mold, and other services including Northamptonshire Police and Northamptonshire Fire & Rescue Service (NFRS). This is an important role, as it helps the Commissioner, Police and Fire make better decisions to meet and understand the needs of local young people.

Who can join the Northamptonshire Youth Commission?

This role is open to anyone aged 14-19 years (up to 24 years for young people with additional needs) living in the Northamptonshire area. We are looking for young people who will be good team players, who will be committed to the project and willing to do all the activities involved. We’re looking to ensure that the Youth Commission is made up of a diverse group of young people who broadly reflect the make-up of the local population, including those who may have direct experience of the police and justice system. In total, we are currently looking to recruit 20 young people.

On the application form you will need to provide details of a named professional who will support your application. This could be a teacher, youth worker, tutor, manager etc.

If I join, what will I have to do?

During 2020 members of the Youth Commission will:

• Take part in Youth Commission sessions: You will participate in a number of sessions of the Youth Commission between September 2020 and July 2021.
• Work on special topics: You will pick a topic (from a shortlist) that interests you to work on with other members. The shortlist will include topics such as mental health, anti-social behaviour and hate crime, domestic abuse etc. that will come from the Police and Crime Plan.
• Gather the views of other young people: You will be given support to carry out research with other young people in a variety of youth settings.
• Plan and get involved in events: You will work in a team to design and plan events to engage with other young people in your area. You will work with the office of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner on delivering some of the recommendations that come out of the research.
• Report back to the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner: You will contribute towards the analysis of information gathered from young people in your area, and help to present back your conclusions to the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner and other partners in Northamptonshire.

What will I get from being part of the Youth Commission?

• You will have the opportunity to discuss issues with the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner: say what young people think about police, fire and crime in their area and find out more about policing and fire services.
• Meet new people: You will gain skills in social research, which you will be able to put on your CV for work or application to Further or Higher Education.
• Be an ambassador to other young people: Give a voice to young people in your area.
• Help you to build up your CV

 What happens next?

Applications will re-open on July 1^st 2020 and close on July 31^st 2020.

When we receive your application we will then carry out some telephone conversations and invite shortlisted applicants to an informal video interview. Interviews will take place in August 2020.
